The Book of Negroes by Lawrence Hill
The Book of Negroes is a novel consisting of the idea of fundamental human rights being violated unlawfully. Many characters in this novel experience excruciating pain violating their human rights as they become slaves and experience the horrific life inclusive of servitude. Aminata Diallo, being the protagonist of this novel, experiences and faces such situations throughout her journey of travelling from Africa to America and being a part of the slave trade. Through her journey, Aminata witnesses the mistreatment of those around her and sees the violation of their basic human rights such as the right to liberty and freedom. Slaves were mistreated by being whipped, beaten, and not fed properly. Lawrence Hill provides this vivid journey teaching readers moral and insightful lessons pertaining to the circumstances lacking human rights and the affects it has on many characters in the novel.
